Built between 1902 and 1908 as a purpose-built direct current power station, the Arts Exchange is a six-storey stone and brick building at Dawes Point. It operated as a Mining Museum until 1996, was acquired by Arts NSW (now Create NSW) in 1999, and now serves as a hub for Sydney’s major festivals and key arts organisations. UBW was engaged to carry out stone repair, repointing and seismic stabilisation of the gables.
Our Approach
Staged heritage repairs with a managed road closure.
A key milestone came on 21 June 2016, when UBW removed 114-year-old coping sandstones from the building. The removal required a partial shutdown of George Street from 9pm to 5am, coordinated with the City of Sydney, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority and Roads and Maritime Services. The full programme ran for 30 weeks.
